THE G2V PODCAST
DOCTOR OF THE DEAD
Excellent episode about the 1978 classic “Dawn of the Dead”. I was 18 when I saw this movie in Lubbock, Texas. It profoundly affected me for years. How much? I’m 55, and whenever I’m in a public place I make a quick mental survey of entrances, exits, and potential weapons in case of a zombie problem.
This (the episode) is the first time I’ve heard somebody else voice (eloquently) the dissatisfaction I’ve always felt with the “third act” motorcycle raiders sequence. (Actually I’d say this movie has five acts. The idea of a three-act structure is a rough guideline, not a law of physics.) It’s actually a great action set-piece (except for the pies), but it belongs in a different movie. After an hour and a half of an intense four-hander, it’s jarring.
There’s so much more we could say about this movie. (And now I’m thinking I haven’t watched it yet this year! Might have to haul out the four-disc DVD set.)
Anyway, thanks for another great episode. Carry on!
